M.U without Bruno: It looks like that but it's not like that

December 11, 2023

Brunol Fernandes has rarely missed matches since joining Manchester United in 2020.

In adulthood, Bruno Fernandes' legs hardly rested. He arrived at Manchester United from Sporting CP at the beginning of 2020, barely missing a single match. For many years from Lisbon to Manchester, the players' association FIFPro has rated Fernandes as the most frequently used football player on the planet. However, there were days when Man United were forced to take the field without their talisman. So how did the Red Devils perform in those matches?

Fernandes has featured in 95% of Manchester United's matches in all competitions since his arrival in January 2020. Things started very well. Fernandes has not lost a single match in his first 17 appearances for Man United, directly contributing to 16 goals in this series as the team's new offensive pillar.
Solskjaer said of his number 10: "He's definitely a brave lad. He sees the pass. You can't take that away from Bruno. You want him to be the X factor."

Cristiano Ronaldo's appearance before the 2021/2022 season coincided with Fernandes's decline in form. The Portuguese veteran is a legend but lacks the pace to work alongside Fernandes - or in any modern team - and by November Solskjaer was gone. Ronaldo followed a year later. Erik ten Hag definitely chose Fernandes over Ronaldo, making this player the captain of M.U. For all the criticism directed at Fernandes, Ten Hag remains steadfast in his support.

What is surprising, however, is that Man United have a significantly better record without their captain in the team. Without Fernandes at the helm, Man United won more matches (73% compared to 55%), scored more goals (2.0 per match compared to 1.7) and conceded fewer goals (1.1 compared to with 1,2).

However, isolating those raw numbers would be a serious oversight. Fernandes missed less than a dozen games in his four years with the club - that's too small a sample to draw conclusions from. Almost half of Bruno's breaks were in the first rounds of cup competitions, against opponents they were almost certain to win.

The Portuguese player has been very persistent during his time in the north of England, only missing one Premier League match due to fitness problems; an illness kept Fernandes absent from Man United's 3-2 win over Tottenham in March 2022.
Suspension is a more pressing concern for Fernandes recently. Accumulating enough yellow cards forced Fernandes to sit out during Man United's trips to Aston Villa and Sevilla last season - they lost convincingly in both matches.

In these matches, the away team seemed to lose their attacking momentum without their creative players. In Unai Emery's debut with Villa, Man United had their lowest xG of the season. Four days later, Villa went to Old Trafford and lost 2-4, in which Fernandes scored.

Worryingly, Man United's next match without Fernandes is Liverpool's away trip to Anfield.
